How N4 differs from N5

The jump from N5 to N4 is not mainly about difficulty in the abstract. It is about variety. At N5, many words are short and visually transparent. At N4, you still see everyday vocabulary, but you meet more movement verbs, more school and work language, and more words that combine familiar pieces into slightly longer forms. A learner who could slowly decode N5 now has to become faster and more flexible. That is the real shift.

N4 is also the stage where kanji plus kana words continue to matter a lot. Learners sometimes expect N4 to become mostly compact compounds, but verbs like ่ตทใใ‚‹, ๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹, ๅง‹ใ‚ใ‚‹, and ็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚‹ remain central. If you are good at reading these smoothly, you will understand textbook dialogues, graded readers, and practical notes much faster.

Reading tips that actually help

One of the best N4 habits is to read the entire word shape before guessing. Beginners often see the first kanji, jump to a reading, and get stuck. That works badly with longer words. Instead, pause for one second and take in the full shape. ่‡ช่ปข่ปŠ is easier when seen as a single familiar block than as three separate problems. The same principle helps with ่ตทใใ‚‹ and ้™ใ‚Šใ‚‹. The kanji tells you the core meaning, but the full word shape tells you the reading pattern.

Fourth, spend most of your time on the slow group. The instant group needs maintenance, but the slow group is where improvement happens. These are the words that almost work and can become automatic with a little pressure.

It also helps to mix recognition and production. Recognition means choosing the right hiragana reading from four options. Production means saying or typing the reading yourself. If you only do one mode, your skill may look stronger than it really is. Combining both gives a more honest picture of what your brain can do under real reading conditions.

You should also revisit N5 while studying N4. That is not a step backward. It prevents erosion in your foundation. Advanced learners still review basics because speed matters more than pride. A strong N4 learner is usually someone whose N5 readings have become very stable.

How N4 prepares you for broader reading
